The 6th European Basic Course in Neuropathology will be held from 24-27 September 2024, in Aachen, Germany

About the basic course
The basic course in neuropathology is meant for those who do not have the benefit of structured neuropathological training for and in their professional neuropathological activities. The course is intended for trainees in general pathology, neuropathology, neurology or neurosurgery but also for neurobiologists and PhD students in neurological sciences.  Specifically, for those who, in the course of their PhD research, will be involved with the neuropathology of, for example, neurodegenerative diseases, developmental diseases, brain tumours or white matter diseases. The course is also intended for medical specialists from general pathology, neurology or neurosurgery, who would like to get more insight in the field of neuropathology.

History
The first basic course was held from 10-14 March 2008. The home base for the course is normally the Institut für Neuropathologie, Universitätsklinikum der RWTH in Aachen, Germany. Subsequent courses were held there in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. In April 2022 it was the first virtual-only version. Registrants could attend realtime, participate in the Q&A and various interactive sessions. They received 6 months acces to the recorded sessions, case materials and most powerpoint presentations of the abovementioned course. The next course (24-27 September 2024) is will be an in-person course.

Program
The program typically has 6 themes:

• General neuropathology
• Developmental neuropathology & epilepsy
• Infectious & inflammatory diseases of the nervous system
• Neurodegeneration & prion diseases
• Muscle pathology & metabolic diseases
• Neuro-oncology

In these sessions experts in the various fields give overviews of the latest insights. In various ways interaction with the audience will be sought: Q&A, case discussions, polls and live demo of digital microscopy. For the first time, the program will offer the chance to participate in small groups in one-hour brain cutting (2 sessions). Prior to the start of the course, the participants receive a link to case material which includes digital microscopy.

Accreditation (European CME credits (ECMEC®s)
Accreditation will be requested from the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®)  In addition, each participant will receive a Euro-CNS certificate of attendance.

Recognition in the USA and Canada:
Through an agreement between the Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes and the American Medical Association, physicians may convert EACCME® credits to an equivalent number of AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Information on the process to convert EACCME® credit to AMA credit can be found at www.ama-assn.org/education/earn-credit-participation-international-activities.

Registration
Registration is open. The registration fee is 1050 for Euro-CNS members and 1200 Euro for non-members. You are a member of Euro-CNS if your national/regional society of neuropathology is affiliated with Euro-CNS. Member dues for 2023 must have been paid. The registration fee covers  participation in the program, access to an e-learning module containing case material with digital microscopy, catering during the course days (breaks and lunch) and the course dinner. Upon your online registration we will send an email to you confirming receipt and availability.

Travel grants Euro-CNS
A limited number of grants of € 550 is available for young trainees in neuropathology (under 35 years of age). Preference is given to applicants from emerging countries in Europe. The grant application deadline is 1 July 2024 or as soon as we are fully booked. No applications will be accepted after this date.  If you apply for a grant – please indicate this in the online registration form. There are no separate grant application forms. The grant amount will be deducted from your registration fee.

Travel grants International Society of Neuropathology
If you are a trainee in neuropathology in a low-income country (and non-European/non-North American), we recommend that you apply for an ISN award that will help with covering the cost of travel and participation. For application details and eligibility please see the ISN website. Please note that the applications for ISN grants are handled and administered by ISN and that you need to register normally for the Euro-CNS course.

On Thursday evening (26th September), after the last lecture, we will take you on a guided tour of the beautiful city of Aachen and complete the tour with dinner buffet in the Ratskeller restaurant.

There are no hotels close to the venue, but you can easily go by bus from every hotel in Aachen.
